We ask God to bless us. We ask for jobs, things, relationships. That’s okay. God wants us to ask. He wants to bless us. Isaiah 30:18 says, “…the Lord longs to be gracious to you.”
But God also knows our heart and if what we ask from Him is more important to us than our relationship with Him, He knows. Or, to put it another way, if we are asking for something or someone to fill a void in us that only God can fill, He knows. And He is not being cruel if He says, “No.” In fact, He’s being quite merciful.
What we don’t often understand, is that God is not just a giver of blessings. He IS the blessing. Being in a relationship with Him is the greatest gift we can get this side of Heaven. Fellowship with the Creator of the Universe is the only thing that truly fulfills us. Yet, it takes us so long to get it. Many never do. Until we do, He may just remove everything that stands between Him and us. Is that car more important? That job or promotion? What about that guy or that girl you must have? Deuteronomy tells us that God is jealous for us. It’s a righteous jealousy for his people. He wants our undivided attention and devotion. And it’s really what we want too. Most of us just don’t know it yet.
